Description	The navigation system by the duo Herrmann and Tomšej is part of a broader set of street furniture that emerged from an international design competition in 2024. The jury praised the project for its authorial originality, aesthetic coherence, and the appropriate use of materials that correspond with the traditions of the cemetery environment. The design is based on the technology of metal casting into molds, which has a long tradition in Prague not only in cemetery navigation elements. “Our intention was to create elements that respect the history of the place while at the same time delivering a clean aesthetic expression,” the designers state. “We spent a great deal of time in cemeteries and noticed that the original markers from the Habsburg monarchy period still function well and harmoniously fit into their surroundings,” they explain. It is precisely these historical forms that the new design builds upon—it respects tradition without resorting to historicism, instead offering a contemporary and practical solution. Thanks to this combination, the new elements naturally blend into the cemetery environment. The conical columns and minimalist panels are modular and can be adapted to the needs of a specific cemetery, a particular purpose, or type of information. The metal-casting technology ensures long service life, as proven by historic cemetery elements.
